Selfish parkers and being slut shamed.

Sat in the chemo bar for 3rd cocktail, although this time it’s much less and no ‘pump’ attached for 5 days after. Just forgot to have blood test yesterday so bit of a delay. In room with 3 other men, 2 of whom would appear to have similar cancers and treatment. They spent a while comparing notes, I half listened but felt no compunction to join in. Suppose it’s good to hear men talk openly about such stuff. At least they didn’t use any ‘banter’. This leads onto the bulk of this blog which will be about feminism, and particularly about the neanderthal behaviour of some men.

Before I start, when asked about any allergies gave my usual Farage response, one nurse burst out laughing and the other said “who’s he?” – best response yet!

So lots of articles lately about lad culture, banter and pick up artists (PUA). Hadley Freeman in today’s Guardian (do I need to broaden my media reading?) about these so called pick up artists. A PUA is: “a person who practices finding, attracting, and seducing sexual partners.” The most infamous is Julien Blanc, he’s just been banned from Australia and there’s a new petition to ban him from UK. One approach PUAs use is “negging” which is a “negative hit” , it’s a type of reverse psychology where they think that by basically insulting a woman she then sees the man as a “challenge”, the woman is psychologically manipulated into having sex.

I’m afraid when I was a student I did use ‘banter’ to try and ‘pull’, for example when Martin and I went to discos if one of us was dancing with a girl the other would sidle up to the girl and say “he can’t dance but he’s good in bed”. I did also think about how in those times (mid 70’s) the onus was on the boy to go and ask the girl for a dance, being refused was always a blow to the ego. I also remember a lads trip to Spain when I was a very naive 18 year old, can’t remember what I said to a girl but I still remember the pain as she kneed my knackers..What these episodes did start to kindle in me was to think about what was happening. The process for me was helped by living in a shared house of mainly women, the contrast of playing rugby, a hotbed of sexist banter, living in London and being able to choose friends and exposure to alternative thinking.

For a while I’ve considered myself feminist in the basic and true sense of the term in that we’re equal.

Unfortunately too many men can’t or won’t accept this and resort to attacking female sexuality, and as Laurie Penny terms it: “on our bodies as meat and function” (http://laurie-penny.com/why-were-winning-social-justice-warriors-and-the-new-culture-war/). Penny argues in this article that “everywhere, sexists, recreational misogynists and bigots are losing. They are losing and don’t know why”, and that this is a cultural war: ” The problem is that women are creating culture, changing culture, redefining culture, and those cunts, those poisonous cunts, those disgusting, uppity cunts must be stopped.” If you don’t think yourself a feminist then perhaps you need to consider whether you then don’t think women are equal? If you want a quick example of how this happens go on to Amazon and see the reviews for Penny’s latest book, Unspeakable Things. Hey, am I going to be slut shamed now?

Had a lovely evening last night round at Sal and Mike’s for his birthday, had champagne and cake (I was a champagne feminist socialist last night). It was Kate’s first drink in a while and she really enjoyed it.

Just watching the cisplatin dripping rapidly into the feed that goes into my vein, then made the mistake of checking it out on Wikipedia and reading side effects. Was going to copy them in but have quickly decided not to.

Banking: “The industry is rotten to the core. But 6 years after Lehman toppled, and 2 years after Bob Diamond was forced out of Barclays amid the Libor scandal, the protective overgrowth of ideology is still not cleared”, get your pitchforks out I say.

2 graphics today Tim!

Manifesto 17:

  • selfish parkers have compulsory lessons about parking, persistent offenders banned from driving. Too often when looking for a parking space you see cars which have been parked inconsiderately such that they take up more space than they should. Anyone up for designing stickers that can be put on such cars?

Keep on keeping on, love Duncan.
